- If a budget is central to your use of Quicken, you could create a dummy expense category, like 'Savings' and budget for it. But if you don't have any transactions to this category, your budget will be out of whack; if you create dummy transactions to this category, your budget will work, but your cash account would be.
- You now have a report that shows every category used in any transaction (it will not show any unused categories). You can print this report and ignore the dollar number, or; You can export to CSV, open in Excel or Numbers, and remove all but the Category column and then print. For a Payee list, just change Row to Payee in step #2 above.
Quicken 2015 makes life easier for individuals and investors (including especially real estate investors and small-business owners). But that doesn't mean you want to spend any more time working with each whistle and bell in Quicken 2015 or reading more about the software program than you have to. Here are quick summaries of stuff you can do and information you can employ to make using the world's most popular financial record-keeping tool easier and more profitable.
Windows Tricks for Quicken 2015 Users
Quicken 'plays' well with Windows. Accordingly, you can use a handful of standard Windows tricks to make your use of Quicken financial recording program easier — and faster.
To move quickly to list box entries that begin with a particular letter, press the letter.
To select a list box entry and choose a dialog box's suggested command button, double-click the entry.
To move the insertion bar to the beginning of a field, press Home.
To move the insertion bar to the end of a field, press End.
To close a window or dialog box, click its Close button in the upper-right corner. The police full discography torrent download. (The Close button is the little box with an X in it.)
To minimize a window, which shrinks it to a tiny picture, Windows users need to click the first button in the upper-right corner — the one that looks like an underline. (Windows then places the minimized program on the taskbar.)
To maximize the Quicken desktop so that it fills the entire monitor screen, click the middle button in the upper-right corner of the application window if the button shows one window. If the middle button shows two windows, the desktop is already maximized. For previous Windows versions, click the up arrow in the application's upper-right window.
To do a Help yelp, press the F1 key. This key works just about anywhere. Don't press it in a crowded theater, though.
To start another application in Windows, click the Start button.
To switch to another application, click its button on the taskbar.
To change any document's window size, position the mouse pointer on the window border and then click and drag the border. (If you can't see the border because the window's been maximized, click the middle button — with the two windows in it — in the upper-right corner.)
Cool Date-Editing Tricks for Quicken 2015
See what's new with the 2018 release of Quicken for Mac! Quicken is the most powerful money management software on the market. Jan 06, 2019 Quicken 2019 for Mac. Quicken 2019 for Mac was released with little fanfare in November 2018. Since I purchased a 20-month subscription to Quicken Premiere last year during an Amazon.com Black Friday sale, updates like the 2019 edition have been provided at no additional charge.
Within the Quicken accounting program (and it doesn't matter whether you're using Quicken Starter Edition, Quicken Deluxe, Quicken Premier, Quicken Home & Business, or Quicken Rental Property Manager), you enter dates again and again: the date you write a check, the date you record a deposit, the date you reconcile an account, the date you receive a dividend on some investment, and so on.
Fortunately, you can use several very cool, extremely handy date-editing tricks. Specifically, if the selection cursor is in a Date field, you can do these things:
Press This Key | What Happens |
---|---|
+ | Adds one day to the date shown. |
– | Subtracts one day from the date shown. |
t | Changes the date to today's date. You can remember this because t is the first letter in today. |
y | Changes the date to the first date in the year. Note that y is the first letter in year. |
r | Changes the date to the last date in the year. Note that r is the last letter in year. |
m | Changes the date to the first date in the month. Just to salve my compulsive personality, allow me to point out that m is the first letter in month. |
h | Changes the date to the last date in the month. Okay, last time I'll provide a memory tool: Note that h is the last letter in month. |
4 Tasks Every Quicken 2015 User Should Perform
Working with a richly featured, mature financial record-keeping software program like Quicken 2015 can present a bit of a challenge. The Quicken software just does so much. Here are four tasks that every Quicken user should perform on a regular basis:
Quicken For Mac Review
Set up Quicken bank accounts for all your checking, savings, and money market accounts — and then use the Quicken software to carefully track the money that flows into and out of these accounts. Maintaining even just this simple cash accounting system lets you more easily monitor your finances, budget for the future, and identify money-saving tax deductions.
Just one quick aside for small businesses and rental property investors: The Home & Business and Rental Manager versions of Quicken let you easily set up and run simple cash-based accounting systems for a home-based business and for real estate investments. Use these great tools if you're a real estate investor or business owner!
Use the Retirement Calculator to estimate when and how you can retire. Especially with the financial meltdown in the past decade, people need to get more proactive both about saving for and planning for retirement.
To use the Retirement Calculator, display the Planning tab, click the Planning Tools button, and choose the Retirement Calculator command. Here's a free financial planning tip: Invest some time in figuring out how to really economize on your investment-related costs, because these costs (mutual fund expense ratios, financial advisory fees, trading costs, and so on) can eat away at your profits in a fashion that most amateur investors don't understand.
Create a category list that makes tracking your spending and tax deductions easy. Within Quicken, you organize your financial information using income and deductions categories. Any stream of income you want to separately track or monitor, for example, requires its own category. And any expense that you want to regularly tally — perhaps the expense represents a tax deduction — also requires its own category. You can set up categories by choosing Tools→Category List.
Balance bank accounts each month with only a few minutes of effort by clicking the Actions button and then choosing the Reconcile command. (The Actions button appears in the upper-right corner of the Quicken window whenever a bank register shows.) Reconciling a bank account lets you catch and correct bookkeeping errors with your accounting records.

5 Free, Reliable Websites for Quicken 2015 Users
The web represents a treasure trove of information about personal finance, small business, and tax accounting that Quicken users will appreciate. Individuals, investors, and small business owners just beginning their research, however, often aren't sure which websites offer the most reliable information. Here are half a dozen sites that provide lots of reliable information you can use.
Site | Why It's Useful |
---|---|
Social Security Administration | The Social Security Administration website lets you estimate your future benefits. (Despite what you sometimes here people say, Social Security will 'be there' for future generations. But benefits will probably be scaled back for at least some recipients, which you can read more about at the Social Security Administration's website |
Bogleheads | Basically, the online fan club for Vanguard Group founder John Bogle, this great forum provides tons of investment planning and record-keeping advice — all influenced by a strong belief in the superiority of a passive, low-cost investing |
Quicken | Find lots of stuff for Quicken.com users, all from the maker of Quicken — Intuit. Note that if you register at the Quicken.com site, you also gain additional functionality within the Quicken program. For example, you can usually download stock price information for free. |
Internal Revenue Service | Most people by now know that the IRS website provides downloadable forms and informational booklets. What some people don't know, however, is that it also provides access to U.S. tax law (both the Internal Revenue Code and the Treasury Regulations). |
Evergreen Small Business | The author of Quicken For Dummies has a blog with several hundred pages of small business, personal financial planning, and tax-related information, including free downloadable copies of many of his old (but still useful) books. |

Quicken is a personal finance management tool developed by Quicken Inc. (formerly part of Intuit, Inc.). On March 3, 2016, Intuit announced plans to sell Quicken to H.I.G. Capital; terms of the sale were not disclosed.[1]
Different (and incompatible) versions of Quicken run on Windows and Macintosh systems. Previous versions ran on DOS[2] and the Apple II.[3] There are several versions of Quicken for Windows, including Quicken Starter, Quicken Deluxe, Quicken Rental Property Manager, Quicken Premier, and Quicken Home & Business, as well as Quicken for Mac.[4] Since 2008, each version has tended to have the release year in the product name (e.g., Quicken Basic 2008); before then, versions were numbered (e.g., Quicken 8 for DOS).
Quicken's major marketplace is North America, and most of the software sold is specialized for the United States and Canadian marketplace and user base. But the core functions can often be used more widely, regardless of country; and versions have been tailored for a variety of marketplaces, including Australia, Germany, Hong Kong, India, New Zealand, the Philippines, and Singapore.[5] Development of the UK-specific version of Quicken was stopped in January 2005, with sales and support ending shortly afterwards. There were also versions for Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Denmark, Ecuador, France, Mexico, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Uruguay, and Venezuela.[5]
Product description[edit]
The Quicken name typically refers to the core product offering of personal financial management software. The software includes financial planning activities that, historically, people may have done on paper – recording banking transactions, planning a budget and measuring progress against it, tracking investments and their prices and performance. Quicken has offered various editions, with varying prices – such as Basic which includes only those typical activities for someone with simple banking accounts, to Small Business for someone who also runs a business out of their home.
Quicken includes online services that allow users to retrieve transactions from various providers – such as their bank or credit card company. In most cases, online services and technical support are now supported for up to three years after the product's labeled version. e.g. Quicken 2018 will be supported until 2021.[6]
Related products[edit]
The Quicken brand has been extended to other personal and household areas, including healthcare. Quicken Health Expense Tracker is a free online tool for healthcare consumers enrolled in participating health plans. Users can 'manage and direct their health care finances, view and organize medical expenses, payments and service histories, and download and organize personal health claims data.'[7] The Quicken Medical Expense Manager is a desktop software tool for managing healthcare paperwork, tracking claims and payments, and consolidating related information.
Quicken Kids & Money was a Web-based program that aimed to help parents teach five- to eight-year-old children how to earn, spend, save, and share money. It is defunct.[8]
Other products are aimed at home business and seem to fit in a space for a less formal business than would be using QuickBooks. Quicken Rental Property Manager is a desktop software tool for managing rental properties; tracking tenants, expenses, and payments; and producing tax reports.
Software as a service[edit]
Quicken Online was a free, hosted solution (see software as a service) by Intuit. Intuit hosted all of the user's data, and provided patches and regularly upgraded the software automatically. Initially this was launched as a monthly paid subscription, and was a free service for over a year.
Intuit completed the acquisition of competitor Mint.com on November 2, 2009.[9] Quicken Online was discontinued on August 29, 2010, and users were encouraged to transition to Mint.com.
Beginning with Quicken 2018, Quicken is now a subscription service. Annual memberships can be purchased directly from Quicken.com and two-year subscriptions can be purchased through several retailers.[10]
Editions[edit]
The following are current (selling and supported) and retired (discontinued in both sales and support) versions of Quicken.

Problems[edit]
Intuit stopped supporting its Quicken software in the United Kingdom in 2005, leaving many thousands of users with only partly functional software.[13]
In 2008 and 2009, Quicken users reported an unusually large number of software bugs for a commercial product.[14][15][16] A review of Quicken 2010 suggests that quality and user interface in that product year is dramatically improved.[17]
Existing Quicken Online users' data is not transferable/importable into Mint.com. This is in direct contrast to VP Aaron Patzer's promise, made on April 27, 2010: '[Until the merger with Mint.com is complete], you can continue to use Quicken Online just like you have. Once we have completed integrating all features to Mint, you will be able to easily transfer your information and data to ensure the smoothest transition possible.'[18]
In December 2019, Quicken software abruptly disabled bill-pay services through its Quicken Billpay affiliate, leaving all Quicken users without a fundamental feature of the software. Inquiries of the company were provided a form response that the disabling was a 'known issue' and 'This issue has been escalated to our Product Teams who are currently investigating the root cause of this behavior. At this time there isn't an ETA available.' Quicken bill paying continues to be inoperative as of December 27, 2019.[19]
History of Quicken and the absence of a common cross-platform file format[edit]
Quicken was originally written for MS-DOS and the Apple II back in 1983. The substantial differences between the Mac and these two platforms meant the later Macintosh version was written from the ground up. This led to incompatibilities between the file formats for the earlier versions and the Macintosh version. The Windows version was designed to be compatible with the earlier DOS version's files.
Then when Mac OS X came out in 1999 (server) and 2001 (desktop), a new platform emerged. Apple developed backward compatibility for OS 9 (and predecessors), so Quicken for Mac development continued in an older platform database structure (PowerPC-based). Apple continued to support PowerPC-based apps (via Rosetta) on their Intel-based Macs in August 2009 (via Mac OS X 10.6). Rosetta was a temporary measure to support the eventual transition to exclusively Intel-based software (achieved in March 2011 with the release of OS X 10.7 (Lion)).
In 2009, faced with the eventual retirement of the PowerPC, it was deemed that the structure for Quicken for Mac (2007) was not suited for the direction of the Mac (intel) and OS X.[citation needed] Though they got Quicken for Mac 2007 to run on Intel in 2012,[20] Intuit decided to start from scratch and Quicken Essentials for Mac (QEM) was created in 2010.[21] Quicken 2015 for Mac, released in August 2014, and later versions for Mac are built on the Quicken Essentials for Mac foundation.
